Comparison of IGCC and Pulverized Coal Technologies

Provides a high level assessment of the comparative advantages and some disadvantages of an IGCC versus conventional solid fuel combustion technologies. Discusses fuel flexibility, land space required, efficiency, emissions of air pollutants and hazardous wastes, sulfur and mercury removal, water use, reliability, risks, operating costs and capital costs. Also reviews the major IGCC components including air separation, gasification, coal unloading and preparation, syngas cleanup, combined-cycle power block, and sulfur removal and recovery.

Project Update: Council Bluffs Energy Center - Unit 4

Reviews the 790-MW (net) supercritical, coal-fired power plant project in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The EPC contract for the project was awarded in February 2003 to Mitsui & Company Energy Development, Inc. (Mitsui). Mitsui has assembled an international EPC team consisting of Hitachi America, Ltd., Sargent & Lundy LLC, and Aker Kvaerner Songer Inc. with the turbine generator being manufactured by Hitachi, Ltd. and the steam generator by Babcock-Hitachi K.K.
