Flue Gas Desulfurization

Sargent & Lundy is highly experienced in the detailed design and technology evaluation of all aspects of FGD systems. We have considerable understanding of the full range of FGD technologies and suppliers. Our industry leadership in fossil plant retrofits ensures that our FGD system projects are complete and installed with minimal cost and performance risks.

Experience in all fuels

We match the right technology to varying fuels, operating conditions, and environmental requirements. Our experience encompasses the full range of high- and low-sulfur coals and lignite, all commercially viable FGD technologies and suppliers, reagents, and waste/byproduct concepts.

Broad range of services

We support our clients in all phases of FGD planning, development, and implementation. Our services include:

  • Compliance planning optimization
  • Technology assessments
  • Conceptual design/optimization
  • Procurement
  • Detailed design
  • Construction management,
  • Startup for new or upgraded FGD systems

Fuel Switching

We provide extensive services to plant owners who are considering fuel changes to reduce cost, increase fuel flexibility, and meet environmental regulations. To help determine the most cost-effective fuel usage arrangement, we provide:

  • Performance impact assessment
  • Economic impact assessment
  • Environmental impact assessment
  • Delivery/handling impact assessment
  • Option evaluation
  • Modification implementation, including switching to different fuel

Our experience includes conversions to coals that are very different from the original design fuel, incremental changes through fuel blending, and conversions between coal and gas/oil.

Lower cost, high quality design

One of the most active areas of fuel switching is conversion to PRB coal. We have performed PRB coal conversion studies for more than 100 units and have provided engineering and design services to successfully convert 57 units to fire PRB coal. Our cumulative conversion experience along with our new coal-fired station design expertise ensures that new PRB coal conversion projects, as well as new unit PRB coal design assignments, receive the best engineering practices. The end result is a low-cost, high-quality design.

We can expertly identify the parameters and design issues that are vital to the success of a PRB coal conversion. We base our solutions on existing design, operational preferences and practices, and the characteristics of the proposed new fuel. Although our scope for each project is similar, varying fuel characteristics, boiler types, and other plant system and configuration differences require innovation to accomplish client objectives at the lowest cost and in the shortest possible time.
